![]() Gwynne is a good read on the rise and fall of the Comanche, centered on the legendary Quanah Parker. ![]() If you're interested, Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. They basically won back their homeland through incredible grit, resourcefulness and determination.ĭefinitely the Comanche, as others have said. Their multiple escapes, battles and trek earned them public sympathy, and both groups (Little Wolf's group made it back to the Yellowstone River through Sioux territory) were allowed to remain in the Montana homeland on the Pine Ridge Reservation. They were chased down and reduced in number again in the ensuing massacre. Mistreated again they escaped, although many were killed in the attempt. Cavalry and taken to Fort Robinson in NW Nebraska. The split in two at that point with those under Dull Knife were intercepted by U.S. In response to neglect and near starvation, Cheyenne under Dull Knife (also known as Morning Star) and Little Wolf left Fort Reno, Okla., in 1878, defeated pursuers in Kansas at Turkey Springs and Little Sand Creek and later at Punished Women's Fork, where unfortunately many of their ponies were killed. The also reclaimed their northern homeland after being confined to Oklahoma. They fougth with the Sioux at Little Big Horn. The northern Cheyenne were just as fierce. done better if they had over a century to repopulate, arm themselves, and develop culture around horses. So to really answer the question we would need to hold the situation constant meaning would the Comanche/Apache/Sioux have fared so well if they were in Eastern North America without horses and guns in the 17th century or would say the Cherokee, mohawk, etc. Sometimes this conflict was 200 years apart. The tribes from the West were able to have more time to recover from disease, had guns, had horses, and had a culture of using the horses for warfare. The tribes in Eastern North America dealt with a lot more of the army and settlers too. Even when they got horses and guns they didnt really know how to effectively use them to really fight back. The early tribes were decimated by disease, didnt have horses, and guns. ![]() It isnt an easy question to answer because there was different time periods of conflict where tribes would be in different situations. Sad this is way at the bottom but this is correct answer. If the lands were more desirable they would have been conquered sooner and with far more force. Geography was the Comanches, apaches, and Seminoles greatest asset. Western Europeans had more numbers, better technology, more experience with modern warfare tactics, and a greater desire to conquer lands. If the US army devoted more time and resources to any particular Native American tribe they usually lost swiftly. It's nothing like the Cherokee being driven out of Georgia by the US Army. Most of the natives success is against smaller groups who needed to invade their lands in order to take it because general expansion of the United States lead to those lands finally becoming "desired". Their success in battle has more to do with a lack of interest in western parties and less to do with their ability to fend off large armies. If you look geographically at all the Native American tribes that did "well" in battle and held out long (mostly the Apache, Comanche, and Seminoles), you will notice that they all lived on very unattractive land for western settlers.
